Laura Mulvey-'Male Gaze'
The ‘Male Gaze’ Theory suggests that the camera / audience always represents a heterosexual man’s perspective of the scene objectifying women. Also she suggests that women are only portrayed as one of two possibilities, either a virginal innocent or a sexy whore.
•Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze theory is a certainly included in Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' music video. The camera shots main focus is on the women while the male artists stare at them. There are also close ups of the females which emphasise the sexual appeal intended in the music video. The women have also been purposely dressed in minimal clothing which allows them to show off their chests and curves to create a sexual appeal. The video complies with society being a patriarchal society as the male artists are dominant figures in the video while the women walk and dance around them. Men can also be seen in the video as controlling subjects such as when the man shouts ‘hey girl come here’. This indicates an empowering and controlling attitude taken by the man which links to the theory as the men are in charge.
